Day 1 (Sun)

THE GHAN, ADELAIDE

Step aboard The Ghan and take time acquainting yourself with our friendly staff and your comfortable private cabin. Once you’ve settled in and the big wheels start turning, make your way to the classically styled Queen Adelaide Restaurant carriage for a delicious lunch, accompanied by your choice of fine wines. Watch the rolling pastoral lands of South Australia merge into rugged mallee scrub. Marvel as the spectacular Flinders Ranges disappear into the horizon. A three course meal in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant is bound to satisfy and as darkness falls outside the trains’ windows, talk inevitably turns to the impressive outback gourmet menu. The selection of wines is equally outstanding and staff are expert in helping you find the perfect drop to match your meal. For those with a little steam left in the engine, make new friends in the Lounge or if all that mouthwatering food and sightseeing exhausted you, head back to your cabin for a good night’s sleep in anticipation of a striking outback sunrise. Day 2 (Mon)

THE GHAN, ALICE SPRINGS

Wake up with a coffee or juice and witness an unforgettable outback sunrise off train at Marla, in the remote reaches of South Australia. Back on board, it’s time for brunch. Enjoy a light bite from the extensive menu or order something a little more substantial - perhaps a full breakfast complete with eggs just the way you like them. After a few more coffees, fresh juices and more incredible outback scenery, you’ll be arriving in iconic Alice Springs. Be transferred to your overnight accommodation at Crowne Plaza Alice Springs Lasseters. (B,L)

Day 3 (Tue)

ALICE SPRINGS TO ULURU (AYERS ROCK)

Travel from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock Resort by coach. Take in the rugged desert landscapes, passing through the beautiful MacDonnell Ranges. Stop at the Camel Farm with the opportunity to ride a camel (own additional expense). Your guide will also inform you about the traditional customs and beliefs of the local Indigenous culture. View flat-topped Atila (Mt Conner) in the distance before arriving at Ayers Rock Resort rested, relaxed and ready to explore the amazing World Heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. 

This afternoon travel around the base of Uluru in comfort as your guide provides commentary about the numerous sacred sites and features to be found at Uluru. Continue by coach to the Kuniya Walk where your guide will escort you to the beautiful Mutitjulu Waterhole. View Aboriginal rock paintings and learn about the area. Later visit the Uluru – Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, where you can learn about Aboriginal culture and see Aboriginal arts and crafts. Once you’ve finished your guided walk at Uluru and a brief visit to the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre you’ll head off to the Uluru sunset viewing area. On arrival you’ll be served a selection of Australian wines and canapés while you absorb the enormity and beauty of your surroundings. After sunset, your guide will transfer you to the barbecue site within the Uluru National Park. Once at the site, you will be served a variety of Australian meats and salads, accompanied by beverages of your choosing. Then enjoy tea, coffee and dessert whilst your guide conducts a tour of the night sky, describing and pointing out some of the visible constellations and telling Aboriginal stories that relate to the stars. Day 4 (Wed)

ULURU AND KATA TJUTA (THE OLGAS)

Rise early and travel to the Uluru sunrise viewing area and watch the first rays of the sun set the Red Centre alight. After sunrise you will travel to Kata Tjuta and enjoy panoramic views of the southern side of Kata Tjuta before arriving at the base of Walpa Gorge. Spend some time exploring the gorge and the unusual conglomerate rock formations. The walking trail through Walpa Gorge follows the natural creek between two of the tallest domes of Kata Tjuta. Return to Ayers Rock Resort and an afternoon at leisure.

Day 5 (Thu)

AYERS ROCK RESORT

Spend the day enjoying the many facilities and activities throughout the resort. For those who wish to spend the day further exploring the region we can assist you with a selection of day tours available. 

For that once in a life time experience you could combine the beauty of Uluru and Kata Tjuta in an unforgettable 30 minute helicopter flight. Access from the ground is heavily restricted in Kata Tjuta and the surrounding area. Ensure that you don’t miss out on seeing the entire formation by taking in the view from above. Combined with an aerial view of Uluru we are sure you will be left with unforgettable memories and photographs that will last you a lifetime. ($285.00 per person).

Day 6 (Fri)

AYERS ROCK RESORT TO ALICE SPRINGS

Travel through desert scenery between Ayers Rock Resort and Alice Springs. Your guide will provide comprehensive commentary as you pass through the beautiful rugged outback. Stop at the Erldunda Roadhouse where you may purchase afternoon tea (own expense). Continue towards Alice Springs travelling along the Stuart Highway and upon return be dropped off at Crowne Plaza Alice Springs Lasseters for a further three nights accommodation. (B)

Day 7 (Sat)

ALICE SPRINGS

Tour the sights of ‘The Alice’, visit The School of the Air. Stop at the Telegraph Station and visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service. There’s also a stop at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, where you can get up close with some of the lizards and snakes of Central Australia. The tour concludes with a panoramic view of the township from the top of Anzac Hill. (B) 

Day 8 (Sun)

ALICE SPRINGS

Today is yours to spend at leisure. Relax by the pool, enjoy a long lunch in one of Lasseters’ many restaurants or try your luck at the casino. (B) 

For those who wish to venture out and further explore the region, you could include a morning balloon ride over the MacDonnell Ranges. Experience the breathtaking feeling of floating silently above the outback as the sun slowly rises over the desert on this awe-inspiring ballooning adventure. Float gently across the vast expanse of the Central Australian outback and gain an appreciation of the remoteness of the area as the balloon glides across the landscape. (from $265.00 per person).

Day 9 (Mon)

THE GHAN, ALICE SPRINGS

After breakfast, check out of your hotel. In the afternoon join your coach transfer to the Alice Springs Rail Terminal. Board The Ghan and continue your adventure as you travel north towards Darwin. Talk through your recent adventures with newfound friends in the Outback Explorer Lounge, before dinner in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. Then it’s off to your cabin to loosen the belt and enjoy a cheeky nightcap before bed. (B,D)

Day 10 (Tue)

THE GHAN, KATHERINE AND DARWIN

Today you’ll disembark for a morning of cultural delights in Katherine. Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the Katherine River or gain an insight into the culture and ways of the traditional owners of Nitmiluk, taking part in an exclusive cultural experience. Your journey comes to an end as you arrive into Darwin late this afternoon. (B,L)
